Zipgeist is a macOS app that lets you open zip, RAR, and various other archive files in Finder without waiting for extraction or unpacking. Archives appear as volumes, so you can browse their contents directly, similar to how File Explorer handles archives on Windows.
The developer, who switched from Windows to Mac, built it to fill a long-standing gap in Finder. The page notes that opening an archive is considerably faster than extracting it. Zipgeist also offers extraction for various file types, for users who need to unpack files.
